Anyhow, my very oversimplified take on the ongoing Hamilton discourse is that John Adams is a more likable Federalist than Hamilton, while Albert Gallatin is a more likable Jeffersonian than Jefferson

Russell actually backed Clay initially. It was only after Adams destroyed his career that Clay distanced himself from Russell and Russell joined the Crawford bandwagon
