VR as a technology doesn't feel in a lull to me (I'll use 'lull' instead of 'dead'). I think VR and associated tech, like AR (in forthcoming glasses), will be increasingly relevant. I think there's just a playerbase problem in VR gaming, in both numbers, and if they buy games.
I love the pancake lenses in my Quest 3. The edge-to-edge clarity is great, and I'm sure they'll continue becoming the dominant lens in VR headsets for a while yet. But they do have at least one issue: --> youtu.be/0rqH8kE6TVE?si=vPrd…
It's not often someone can create a melodic song about a night light in the corner of a kid's room, with lyrics including "filibuster vigilantly" and referring to a lighthouse as "my primitive ancestry". Such a good song. youtu.be/vn_or9gEB6g?si=bTqE…
The lack of focus on absolute solid performance in VR on fixed platforms is one of the biggest problems. Stuttering, dropped frames, and inconsistent performance used to be the number one thing to be avoided. Now, it's simply par for the course.
I have zero interest making VR content at the moment, but that's not to say I've lost interest in the technology. I still love the potential of what VR can become. Revisiting the OG HTC Vive makes me realise how far it's progressed in some ways, but also how little in other ways.
I've been working on a little hand-drawn platform game for a while now (non-VR). It's called 'Drawn Before' and the demo is now available on Steam if you'd like to give it a try. Thanks! store.steampowered.com/app/4…
The new trailer for Drawn Before is now available here: youtube.com/watch?v=Q9ByYMxQ…
The demo is also available to try (link in the description to the video).
It's rare that I feel like making a YouTube video these days, but having recently purchased an HTC Vive (my first VR headset back in 2016), it's definitely made me consider a "VR, ten-years-on" kind of retrospective. But then again, that feels like effort...
Bought an OG HTC Vive and it’s sort of in like-new condition. Really looking forward to (like, disproportionally looking forward to it) trying some classic VR with this. Does the OG SteamVR tutorial thing install with this, or do I need to find it?
I'm finally coming round to the opinion that headsets with better specs for VR are not the answer. UI, integration and software are more important at this point. I've entirely lost interest in spec sheets.
I barely went into Horizon Worlds, although I would love a Ready Player One style Oasis - which might've been the dream it was aiming at... some point in the future. So I'm still sort of sad all VR functionality is being deprecated soon. Did "we win"? reddit.com/r/MetaQuestVR/com…
I wrote a VR-focused, science-fiction novel a few years ago. It explores revisiting past memories in VR & using them to solve a crime. If you'd like to check it out, it's available on Amazon & Audible:

It's rare that the mainstream gaming media actually make long podcast sections on VR products, but the #SteamFrame announcement has made them do it. It's times like these that make you realise the value of the takes of dedicated VR channels and outlets for the true in-depth info!
