Definitely agree. Ypu dont need a major budget, or super fancy mechanics to make a great game.
Gothic, Risen, Elex, Of Ash and Steel, etc.. they really are games made with passion to capture nostalgia.
I've just finished Gothic 1 remake and this is how you do remake right (mostly).
Long story short the game carries all the charm and uniqueness of the original while also adding/improving upon it.... unfortunately they also carried its issues as well.
Visuals are breathtaking at times (I love some of the wheater effects and how it looks underwatter or during storm), soundtrack is great, immersion/world building is good, story is good it has some nice interesting changes/additions to the main quests/story and gameplay wise its both faithfull enjoyable and getting stronger is just as satisfying as it was in the original.
Sadly it can be pretty janky/buggy at times, enemies/difficulty feel not only brutal but also unbalanced (I also played it on hard which was one of the dumbest ideas I've ever had), boss fights are dog shit (Mine Crawler Queen, Fire Golem and Final boss especialy) and despite there being some good changes good additions to the main quest.... there some that just aren't fixed or are even worse (like retreving Almanach from Black Goblins is just as tedious as originaly), second visit of Sleeper's Temple is way more frustrating than before (first time visit was pretty frustrating too) and despite some new quests, areas and abilities... I think the game could have udolised it a lot better.
Overall this is one of the few games that prove that you CAN make a good, faithfull, passionate and competent remake of a cult classic
