Anthropic pulled Fable 5 from all users yesterday after a US government export control directive. Within hours, Zhipu announced GLM-5.2, its most capable open-source model. 1M context window. MIT license. Open-sourcing next week. Zhipu read the room. When frontier intelligence can vanish overnight by government order, open-source stops being a philosophical preference. It becomes a strategic imperative. I think this is one of the sharpest PR moves from a Chinese AI company this year. They didn’t just launch a model. They seized the exact moment when the fragility of closed-source access was on full display.

Asia's chip boom is supercharging external surpluses. Taiwan's current account surplus is now ~25% of GDP, and its bilateral surplus with the US has jumped from ~1% of GDP (2019) to >20% today. Korea's heading for an unprecedented 13–15%. China & Japan too — a region-wide surge.
