BREAKING: #CarmenMejia just walked free after 22 years of wrongful conviction in Texas. While she was exonerated on Monday, she was not immediately released due to an immigration hold. ICE announced that in light of the exoneration they would lift the detainer so that she could be released from local custody. "I never lost faith and hope — I never lost it in 22 years," she said. DNA can provide some of the best evidence of innocence, yet Delaware is one of just six states in the country that does not have an evidence preservation law. The lack of consistent procedures for preserving a crime scene pose incredible challenges to wrongfully convicted people to prove their innocence. Along with the Delaware Innocence Project, help us change that today. Take action here. bit.ly/4rb7NLk

Anna Vasquez, of @IPTX and head of the @InnocenceNtwrk board, spent 15 years wrongfully imprisoned after homophobia fueled a wrongful conviction against her and three friends. They are known as the San Antonio Four. Now an exoneree advocate, she has a message for #Pride Month: "We need to push forward together because equality is what we want." LGBTQ people are overrepresented at every step of the criminal legal system. Sexual orientation and gender identity are used to stoke bias in courtrooms — putting innocent people at risk. Recognizing how this happens is how we stop it. bit.ly/3JruffJ @ChristinaSwarns

In 1990, Roy Criner was wrongfully convicted of the murder and sexual assault of Deanna Ogg in Texas. After spending 10 years in prison, he was exonerated in 2000 after DNA evidence proved his innocence. New York makes it impossible for innocent people to prove their innocence without DNA evidence. Help us change that before time runs out. Take action here: innocenceproject.org/petitio…
New York law makes it nearly impossible for innocent people who plead guilty and don’t have the benefit of DNA evidence to go back to court and prove their innocence. Urge Speaker Carl Heastie to bring the Challenging Wrongful Convictions Act (A.7422-C) to the Assembly today. @VOCALNewYork @nyc_defenders @LegalAidNYC @BklynDefender @_CFAL innocenceproject.org/petitio…

New Hampshire residents have a three-year deadline to request a new trial, an arbitrary time limit that can hinder people trying to prove their innocence. After advocacy from the Innocence Project and New England Innocence Project, HB1422, which aims to overturn this rule, now sits on Gov. Kelly Ayotte’s desk as the last step toward approval.
