Self-exploration can be profoundly reparative but only when it unfolds within an accurate anthropology of the person. Engaging in analytic work with a clinician who holds a reductive or fragmented view of human nature risks subtle psychic distortion, as the therapeutic frame itself participates in shaping the client’s self-representation and moral imagination. #ontologymatters #notneutraltherapy #truthbeforetechnique #soulsarenotconstructs #formationoverfeelings

“In my most evil moments, I was convinced that I was doing good, and I was well supplied with systematic arguments... Gradually it was disclosed to me that the line separating good and evil passes not through states, nor between classes, nor between political parties either—but right through every human heart—and through all human hearts. This line shifts. Inside us, it oscillates with the years… and even in the best of all hearts, there remains an un-uprooted small corner of evil. Since then I have come to understand the truth of all the religions of the world: they struggle with the evil inside a human being (inside every human being). It is impossible to expel evil from the world in its entirety, but it is possible to constrict it within each person. —Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

Wondering about eternity is not some eccentric hobby of religious people. It is one of the most human things a person can do.

Realized today that high school English permanently rewired my brain. I literally cannot read a book without a pen to annotate. Accidental superpower? 🖊️ #lookingforpatterns #thisseemssignificant #annotateordie

I don’t know precisely why (when there is so much other genuine cruelty in the world) but something in me really winces every time I see someone reply, “Is it in the room with us right now?” #therapistthoughts

Before I can become who God created me to be, I often have to meet the parts of myself I would rather avoid. The shadow reveals wounds that need healing and places that need grace. It does not reveal my deepest identity. My deepest identity is received from God. #interiorfreedom #thehiddenroomwithin #selfknowledge

An independent variable is a useful research tool. It makes a poor first principle for understanding the human person. #humanperson #firstprinciples #prudence #thepersonisnotthevariable

People move toward what they perceive as good. When someone’s vision narrows around a particular issue, I wonder what beloved thing they are trying to protect and what suffering has convinced them that such protection is necessary. Can I approach that suffering with greater curiosity than I bring to the behavior it produces? #therapistthoughts #counseloreducation #psychicconflict #interiorfreedom

The self cannot bear the weight of being its own god. The problem is not that the self is unimportant. The problem is that the self is too important to be its own highest end. Reading #PsychologyAsReligion by Dr Paul Vitz

A person is a body-soul unity. What we love is not just a mental concept; it physically and spiritually changes us.

The problem with modern ambition is not that people want greatness. It is that they keep confusing greatness with visibility.

Human beings are teleological creatures. Which means your deep longing to become more fully yourself is not cringe. It is metaphysics.

SEL often invites a child to name what is interior and mysterious on a worksheet between math and spelling. Yet the soul is not a prompt! It reveals itself through mutual self giving, where unconditional love and attuned presence have made it safe. Interior revelation belongs to relationship. The family is the school. Without attunement, what is called reflection can quickly become hyperreflection, identity confusion, and…chaos. #personhood #family #formation

Sitting asking questions with your interlocutor present, already shows your right to inquire. That right does not confer correctness, and invoking the Constitution to bridge that gap clouds reasoning. Freedom of thought is not proof of truth… #categoryerror #cognitivedistortions #emotionalreasoning @CNN @andersoncooper

The family is the first laboratory of the human heart. It is there, amid the ordinary and the imperfect, that we begin the lifelong experiment of becoming persons—learning, often by contrast, what love, forgiveness, selfishness, and grace truly are. It is both our wound and our medicine, the mirror in which we first see what it means to be human. #personhood #identity #family #formation

Much of intellectual life rests on small gifts of language. A well-placed phrase can suddenly illuminate an entire pattern, especially in psychology and philosophy. When a true “ah-ha” moment happens, my heart usually pulls me to circle back and thank the person who sparked it. So here is a genuine thank you to all the people who have ever offered me those linguistic gifts. #gratefulheart #creditwhereitsdue #intellectualhonesty #goodideas #psychology #philosophy

Pedantic people frequently love truth. Yet the defense can protect the form of truth while distancing the person from the living encounter with it. Precision replaces presence.

Train the mind to look long enough at what is real, and a strange discovery begins to unfold: goodness was never scarce. It was hidden in plain sight, waiting for attention mature enough to perceive it. #metaphysics #thegood #attention

If the hallmark of every encounter that heals is the turning from content to process, then it is this process *embodied presence* when one soul attends to another beneath the gaze of our common Father. There, the person begins to recollect what he or she has always been: fashioned for truth, ordered to love, and capable of returning to an integrated wholeness that restores agency, coherence, and the freedom to love in truth.
