After the seismic shift of 2003’s Sing the Sorrow, AFI pushed even further into the shadows on ‘Decemberunderground', their platinum-selling 2006 follow-up and first album to debut at Number One on the Billboard 200. Reuniting with producer Jerry Finn, whose fingerprints helped define pop-punk’s mainstream rise, the band sharpened its blend of gothic drama, hardcore intensity and arena-sized melody into something slicker, darker and more immediate.
Entertainment Weekly called it their “most melodically acute distillation” of an “eerie, metal-edged Cure sound,” while Alternative Press praised it as “slicker, sleeker and more immaculately angst-ridden than its predecessor.” Anchored by the inescapable “Miss Murder” and deepened by fan favorites “Love Like Winter,” “Kill Caustic” and “Summer Shudder,” ‘Decemberunderground' remains one of AFI’s defining statements: theatrical, razor-edged and still burning with alienation, heartache and conviction.
