The first and only classic Mini Cooper to run The Great Race. We're excited to rally from RI to ND in this right-hand-drive, 1964 Morris Mini Cooper S!
So, in the end, we took fourth place in the rookie class and 42 overall. That comes with $2000 of prize money on top of $750 from our rookie stage wins throughout the week. We’ll done Intrepid team!
The 933 performed magnificently after a couple of hiccups near the beginning (solenoids, starter) but Bill G. kept it running like a top for us so hats off to him!
Also to Shirley and Carol for taking care of everything else so we could worry only about the race, thanks ladies!
We were rookies in the true sense of the word having never before sat in the car with instructions and a stopwatch.
So, we’ll take it as a moral victory.
Great to make new friends, see new places and try something completely different than road racing in a car.
The winning “rookie” team has rallied through out the world. The second place team was from Australia and came here to do this rally which also makes us wonder if they weren’t an experienced team that came to try a N America rally. Rookie just means first time to do the GR.
The margin to the first place rookie team was 31 seconds so had we not missed a random, handmade sign, or had they shown us rookies what to expect like this the day before, and if we would have had just an average day, we should/could have won.
All good things must come to an end. After getting to within a second of the rookie class lead yesterday, we missed an emergency, on course, change sign that altered the restart time in the afternoon. We started about 7 minutes early which resulted in a 5 minute leg.
We were totally confused not knowing about the change but followed through with the leg to the end. So while we didn’t go off course, it’s blown our score and put us out of contention for anything. Rookie mistake that’s on me, the navigator. 😬😡
