If you're relying on a metal, you want to know exactly how much physical strain it can undergo without cracking or breaking. But there are no robust ways to predict ductility. @AmesNatLab developed a new way to do so based on quantum mechanics: ameslab.gov/news/researchers…
ALT Illustration with a yellow region that represents higher electronic change in the areas between atoms and is responsible for better ductility in certain metals. There are light blue regions surrounding it that have weaker charge activity. There are atoms in these areas with contours showing the charge distribution around them.
MSE junior Hannah Cochran presented at the 35th Annual All Iowa Glass Conference recently. Even in the summer our #CycloneEngineers are learning and growing!
Steve Martin and his research students are working to invent better materials for batteries so that we all have more powerful, longer-lasting, safer and quicker-to-recharge batteries for our phones, vehicles and other applications.news.iastate.edu/news/2023/0…
“I was at a materials engineering demonstration and they brought in a huge sheet of glass, putting it between two chairs. They stood on it, and they bounced on it – and it wouldn’t break. Then... the entire thing shattered.”

Last week Nano@IAState was held to bring together ISU, Ames Lab, and industrial scientists and researchers working on the synthesis and characterization of nanomaterials and applications of nanoscience.
Research has been incredibly helpful to inform my decisions on my engineering future. The people I have been working with and the grad students in the lab have been amazing in their mentorship and knowledge of performing research and of graduate school.

Admitted Students Day is a chance for incoming students to learn more about each department and where they might be a good fit. The ISU Materials Advantage chapter and MSE staff was on hand to give demos and answer any questions teens or parents might have had! #CycloneEngineers
Congratulations to Nicholas Oldham, sophomore in materials engineering, who has been named a Goldwater Scholar, the premier undergrad scholarship in STEM!
