Yet another display of hypocrisy and double standards at the UN Security Council meeting and stakeout. A certain number of members, at the behest of the United States, repeated baseless allegations against Iran’s peaceful nuclear program, parroting the U.S. and Israeli regime’s disinformation campaign. UNSCR 2231 expired on 18 October 2025, bringing all related provisions and mandates to an end. There is no legal basis for the so-called 1737 Committee, no Security Council sanctions resolutions on Iran remain in force, and no justification whatsoever for convening meetings under the “Non-Proliferation” agenda. This constitutes a blatant abuse of Security Council authority and a deliberate attempt to mislead the international community. For more than five decades, Iran has remained a responsible NPT State Party and has never sought nuclear weapons. The real threat to the non-proliferation regime is the impunity enjoyed by those who attack safeguarded peaceful nuclear facilities while claiming to uphold international law and non-proliferation. The current situation is the direct consequence of the U.S. withdrawal from the JCPOA, the E3’s persistent failure to comply with their commitments, and the unlawful military attacks by the U.S. and Israel against Iran’s safeguarded peaceful nuclear facilities.

U.S. Excessive Demands Push the NPT into Free Fall The NPT Review Conference failed for the third consecutive time due to obstructionism by the United States and its allies. Iran’s warning: Without nuclear disarmament, no future can be envisaged for the NPT.

The U.S.—the only country in history to have used nuclear weapons and itself responsible for attacks against peaceful nuclear facilities under IAEA safeguards, targeting of civilians and civilian infrastructure, continues to violate international law through unlawful maritime blockades, and unwavering support for the Israeli regime’s crimes and atrocities across the region, once again abused the UN Security Council’s platform by spreading lies, false accusations, and disinformation against Iran and its peaceful nuclear programme and cynically invoking international peace and security or freedom of navigation. In fact, the culprit and the thief are now playing the role of prosecutor and judge, trying to whitewash his own crimes.

It is now crystal clear that the U.S. is seeking to exploit the number of the so-called co-sponsors of its politically motivated and one-sided draft resolution to manufacture a false image of “broad international support” for its ongoing unlawful actions and to pave the way for further military adventurism in the region. Should the U.S. trigger any new escalation, all co-sponsoring States will share international responsibility alongside Washington for the consequences. No political excuse or diplomatic cover can absolve them of responsibility for facilitating, enabling, and legitimizing U.S. aggression.

The U.S. attempt to portray the number of co-sponsors of its politically motivated draft resolution as broad international support and proof of Iran’s isolation is both absurd and deceptive. No number of coerced co-sponsorships can legitimise Washington’s ongoing internationally wrongful acts against Iran, including maritime blockade, attacks on and illegal seizure of Iranian commercial vessels, and hostage-taking of their crews in a manner resembling piracy. Everyone knows that many members joined the draft resolution under political pressure, coercion, and even threats. The U.S. representative’s claims of broad backing are nothing more than a desperate effort to manufacture legitimacy for predetermined political objectives, undermine the credibility of the UN Security Council, and provide political cover for unlawful actions.

The only viable solution in the Strait of Hormuz is clear: a permanent end to the war, the lifting of the maritime blockade, and the restoration of normal passage. Instead, the U.S. is pushing a flawed, politically motivated UN Security Council draft resolution under the pretext of “freedom of navigation” to advance its political agenda and legitimise unlawful actions—not to resolve the crisis. Iran calls on Member States to act on the basis of logic, fairness and principle, not pressure, reject the draft, and refrain from supporting or co-sponsoring it.

Extremely SHAMEFUL! For 56 years, the U.S.—possessor of thousands of nuclear warheads and the No. 1 proliferator of such weapons—has been in clear non-compliance with its nuclear non-proliferation and nuclear disarmament obligations under Articles I and VI of the NPT. The U.S. should not be given any cover for its outrageous and hypocritical behavior. Legally, there is no restriction on the level of uranium enrichment, so long as it is conducted under the IAEA’s supervision, as was the case with Iran.

On April 30, the National Day of the Persian Gulf, and in the face of the imposed war, cruel U.S. sanctions, and economic siege, the Iranian people have proven that dignity is not negotiable and independence is not for sale. Those who sought to break Iran through blockade and coercion have only strengthened our resolve. The Persian Gulf stands as a testament to resistance, sacrifice, and the unshakable will of a nation that bows to no power.

While all of Iran’s enriched uranium has always been under the full supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency, and there is no report of even one gram of Iran’s nuclear material being diverted, the U.S. exploited the NPT Review Conference and portrayed Iran’s enriched uranium as a danger in order to divert attention from its own violations and those of its allies in the field of nuclear disarmament. The UN Security Council, the IAEA Director-General and the Board of Governors not only failed to condemn these illegal attacks, but most regrettably, took actions that reversed the roles of the victim and the aggressor.

At yesterday’s UNSC meeting held on Maritime safety, Iran underscored: Any disruption to maritime transport in the Persian Gulf and Strait of Hormuz directly and its consequences lie with the US, whose unlawful actions endanger international navigation. As the main coastal State, Iran has the legitimate and legal rights to take necessary and proportionate measures to address emerging security threats, ensure safe navigation, and prevent the misuse of the Strait of Hormuz for hostile or military purposes. Lasting stability requires ending aggression, guaranteeing non-recurrence, and fully respecting Iran’s sovereign rights and vital interests. The US imposition of a maritime blockade, illegal seizure of Iranian vessels, and taking their crews hostage violate international law, the UN Charter, and amount to piracy and aggression. Iran calls on the Security Council to ensure accountability for the US’s unlawful actions and the immediate release of all vessels and crews.

Iran is not a party to the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. Therefore, it is not bound by its treaty-based provisions. As the main coastal State within whose territorial sea the Strait of Hormuz lies, Iran has the legitimate and legal right to take necessary and proportionate measures to address emerging security threats, ensure safe navigation, and prevent the misuse of the Strait of Hormuz for hostile or military purposes. Any disruption to maritime transport in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, and its consequences, lie with the U.S., whose unlawful actions endanger international navigation. Lasting stability and security in the Persian Gulf and the wider region can only be achieved through a durable and permanent cessation of aggression against Iran, supplemented by credible guarantees of non-recurrence, and full respect for the legitimate sovereign rights and interests of Iran.

The U.S. attack and illegal seizure of Iran’s commercial vessel “Toska,” and the taking of its crew hostage on 19 April in the Sea of Oman—while carrying critical dialysis supplies and medical equipment—constitutes a flagrant breach of international law, including the peremptory prohibition of aggression, human rights and the right to life. This coercive and unlawful act endangers lives, undermines freedom of navigation, and places vulnerable patients at grave risk. The perpetrators must be held accountable.

On 19 April, near Iran’s coast in the Sea of Oman, U.S. military forces attacked and seized Iran’s commercial vessel Touska, taking its crew hostage. This constitutes a grave breach of international law, a clear violation of the ceasefire, and an act of aggression marked by the hallmarks of piracy. Such reckless conduct directly endangers international navigation and undermines maritime safety and security. In a letter to the UNSG and UNSC, Iran calls for a firm and unequivocal condemnation of this act of aggression and piracy, full accountability for those responsible, and the immediate and unconditional release of the vessel, its crew, and all those affected.

Iran expresses its appreciation to China and Russia for their responsible conduct and today’s principled use of the veto in the UN Security Council. By blocking a flawed draft, they upheld the UN Charter and prevented the Security Council from being misused to legitimise U.S. aggression under the pretext of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf. They stood firmly on the right side of history.

Once again, the U.S. President openly threatens to destroy infrastructure essential to civilian survival in Iran. He stated that: “Tuesday will be Power Plant Day and Bridge Day. all wrapped up in one, there will be nothing like it!!!” If the conscience of the United Nations were alive, it would not remain silent in the face of the overt and shameless threat by the war-mongering President of the United States to target civilian infrastructure. Trump seeks to drag the region into an endless war. This is direct and public incitement to terrorise civilians and clear evidence of intent to commit war crime. The international community and all States have legal obligations to prevent such atrocious acts of war crimes. They must act now. Tomorrow is too late.

The U.S. and Israeli regime’s systematic targeting of civilians and critical infrastructure in Iran—including the Mahshahr Petrochemical Zone (today) and the Karaj–Tehran B1 Bridge (1 April)—constitutes war crimes and State terrorism. These criminal acts violate IHL and terrorise civilians. The international community must act decisively and condemn unequivocally.

The U.S. President’s explicit threat to “bomb Iran back to the Stone Age” reflects ignorance, not strength, and constitutes evidence of intent to commit war crimes under international humanitarian law and the Rome Statute. Iran’s civilisation spans more than 7,000 years, whereas the U.S. is scarcely 250 years old. Civilisations are defined by their history, culture, resilience, and scientific contributions. The world remains indebted to the civilisation and knowledge that Iranian scholars have bestowed upon humanity for millennia. Such a civilisation cannot be destroyed by bombing.

One of the principal factors contributing to the increased success rate of Iranian missiles in striking the military and security installations of the Zionist regime of Israel is indeed the targeting of United States bases in the region, which has diminished their intelligence and operational interception capabilities against our missiles. At the instigation of the Israeli regime, the United States has effectively turned certain countries in the region into theatres of conflict.
