SFF73 ranking. Overall a pretty good time, the bottom two were the only ones I thought were, like, actively bad
Sydney Film Fest starts today so here's a thread I'll be updating with my thoughts on each of these films as I see them🫡

Forgot to update, but I thought this was really cute. Nice original songs and a really great performance from Barbie Ferreira. Maybe goes on for a little too long

You are so upset that he won't fuck you it's truly embarrassing to watch
good because he's not getting one anytime soon. also quite funny for him to say something like that after one of the most desperate and embarrassing oscar campaigns in recent memory

Kinda can't believe people on here were saying this was conservative coming out of Cannes, genuinely dumb as rocks. Incredibly timely and thought provoking study of empathy and punishment. Really isolating and beautiful cinematography. Sebastian Stan is our greatest living actor

I thought most of the scripted vignettes were kinda weak but I really enjoyed the parts that were just Birkin talking about life to the camera. Varda lowkey dripped out at all times, mad respect

Have admittedly never watched another Araki before, but I thought this was so awesome. Olivia Wilde is doing career best work. All of the interiors are so pretty and I really liked the daydreamy vibe to parts of it. I think Cooper Hoffman is very beautiful and talented also 👍

Really wish I liked this but sadly I found it to be incredibly boring. Really nice score and production/costume design but the edit just completely kills all momentum. Bummed!

Really gruelling watch. Zvyaginstev tricks you into thinking this is just gonna be a family drama and then beats the fuck out of you. Oppressive sound design. Was followed by maybe the worst post-screening Q&A I've ever had to sit through

Always wary of festival hype, but I genuinely think this is one of the most profound and moving films I've ever seen. Captures humanity with a serenity that I found really affecting and leaves you with a burning desire for interpersonal connection. Beautiful, beautiful stuff

First certified 5 star of the fest imo. A really timely exploration of the artist's relationship with national identity and a meditation on the dangers of an idealised homeland. Hüller and Zischler's lead performances are amongst the best of the decade. Really loved!
