The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) has told us that the standards by which people are measured will be distorted before the Hour comes. The word of a liar will be accepted and believed, whilst the honest and trustworthy will be accused of betrayal. Imam Ahmad, Ibn Maajah and Al-Haakim narrated that Abu Hurayrah (RA) related : “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘There will come to the people years of treachery, in which the liar will be believed, the honest will be disbelieved, traitors will be entrusted with things and trustworthy people will be regarded as traitors, and the ruwaybidah will speak. It was asked, “What is the ruwaybidah ?’ He said, the insignificant man, who will speak about general interest.” Whoever thinks about the state of the world today will see that we are living in the time the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) spoke of and about. For the liars among the Kuffaar and Mushrikeen, who control the media and those who follow them are believed, whilst those who are honest and Just are not believed. The Muslim Ummah is putting its wealth into the hands of the treacherous Kuffaar and entrusting it to them, whilst the Muslims are described as betrayers and nothing is entrusted to them. Insignificant men speak about world affairs and lead the world in the most foolish manner which has almost led to the destruction of humanity as a whole. May Allah protect us from deception Ameen

This strategy hasn't disappeared, it has simply evolved. In the past, rulers used stadiums and free grain to keep the masses quiet, today, we have different form of entertainment and consumerism, that serve the same purpose. The goal is to keep people so distracted by temporary entertainment that they stop questioning the justice of the systems governing them. That is why in Islam fear of Allah is so important. It acts as a shield against this state of heedlessness, forcing us to look past the distractions and focus on our real responsibilities. While the Roman model was based on manipulating people to maintain power, Islamic leadership is based on Amanah. A leader is one who is accountable to Allah for the welfare of the people, not someone who uses entertainment to hide injustice. The technology has changed from that time to entertainment we have today, but the tactic remains the same, keep the people occupied and distracted with amusement and futile activities, and blinded from what’s truly going on.
