From a completely neutral perspective, Australia has THE most exciting crop of young players out of all nations going to the World Cup you might not have heard of before, but certainly will in the coming years. 🧵 Detailed Thread on a few players to keep an eye our for 👀:

Rapid as anyone amazing carrier in tight spaces or open centrally or down the flank so strong in duels amazing final ball. There’s literally nothing to his game that could suggest he couldn’t be the best LB itw in the near future once he gets his big move.

Just imagined Ben Chilwell, Marc Cucurella or Marcos Alonso attempting that. I laughed.

Only two goalkeepers have made 8 saves and kept a clean sheet in a World Cup game across the last three tournaments: ◉ 9 - Guillermo Ochoa vs. Germany (2018) ◉ 8 - Patrick Beach vs. Türkiye (2026) 🆕 What a performance on your World Cup debut! 🇦🇺

Tony Popović made two extremely gutsy selections. He dropped Australia’s two most senior players for a 21 year old and a 22 year old - both playing in the A-League and with 8 caps combined. They both totally vindicated the decision. Paul Okon-Engstler and Pat Beach were immense.

🤣🤣 I think Turkey can take points off the U.S. They didn’t have a solution to this low block. Cross and pray, no real box threat inside the box, couldn’t shift the block effectively to find any real openings. On the few transitional moments they lack decisiveness.

Serious mog right there tho jesus christ. How are you playing cross and pray when that’s your #9 and that’s who he has to come up against.

Dropped one of LaLiga’s best goalkeepers last season for a 22 year old A-League rookie and was vindicated. Props Popa 👏

He might be the greatest low block defender in history. When he plays for Australia you don’t get a better CB itw for the way we set up.
THE MINISTER OF DEFENCE 😤🚧🧱 HARRY SOUTTAR WE LOVE YOU 😍 #Socceroos #FIFAWorldCup

They relied on rebounds from crosses for their chance creation and pop shots from well outside the box. We threatened on transition and sustained pressure defending in the box. Masterclass of zonal defending from Popovic, fantastic coach. Trusted youngsters and was vindicated.

Metcalfe’s been impressive for me. Tall, strong, very capable on the half-turn. If we can sustain pressure a bit better he’s key to linking in the final 3rd. Volpato on soon tho.

YOU will become one of the best wingers itw
Replying to @IsolatedPlay_
Nestory Irankunda (RW/LW - 20) - Watford 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿. Probably the most recognized in this list for his big transfer to Bayern Munich where he unfortunately didn’t get much of a chance and never made an appearance for the senior team, he has since moved to Watford and had a decent season contributing 8 npG/A at 0.37 p90 (0.57 npxGA 🔝), with 2.44 successful dribbles p90 (99th percentile) for a bottom half team, also recording within the 99th percentile for touches inside the box (📈), another player who I believe could become one of the best in the world in his position. I love him in particular because he’s a TRUE WINGER with his explosiveness 1v1, can run in behind (could be even better), strength to shrug off any fullback, low centre of gravity, and some of the most lethal ball-striking you’ll see in the entire tournament. He might take a little while to put it all together but he has the profile to become better than a similar player like Antoine Semenyo due to the lower COG, or maybe Sadio Mane historically (a lot bulkier). Unfortunately for this World Cup, it looks like he could be reduced to a super-sub for the games vs Turkey and USA, and will come on in the last 30 to form a Front-2 with a special player i’ll mention later in this thread, largely due to the pragmatic tactical setup Popovic (Aus Coach) will employ, but he’ll sure get his opportunities to impress you viewers. Some comps; youtu.be/ro4L_hZ2Hyw?si=d-F2… youtu.be/JjEROs_u-A0?si=LorK…

Beach over the Captain is CRAZY. I like him but god damn, big call. Burgess over Herrington is a little upsetting. Okon in is HUGE. Irvine dropped is another crazy headline being the VC. Popovic has balls. Okon’s the most technical midfielder in the squad.

🇦🇺 Sources: Barcelona among a number clubs interested in Colorado Rapids and Australia int’l center back Lucas Herrington. Herrington, 18, is rising talent. Already one of best young players in MLS. Could make World Cup debut tomorrow
