Congratulations to Chris Yao and Matthew Ding for qualifying for the Math League Championships at UMKC. They competed on May 19th against top students from 9 states/territories. Chris took 3rd place in the 11th grade division. Way to go!!

A lot of mental arithmetic tricks amount to recognizing algebraic patterns in numerical problems. For example, seeing 89*91 as
(90 - 1)(90 1) = 90^2 - 1^2 = 8100 - 1 = 8099.
