ICYMI, we did a deep dive into all of the early Claude Coats & Marc Davis walkthrough pirate concepts recently on Distory with Kate & Kirk in our Pirates of the Caribbean series. youtu.be/1cr28_iCRWc?is=QSxa…

I think Marc Davis’s depiction of these two strong women in PotC would have been a counterpoint to the atrocities against women also proposed in this storytelling, of which I believe is where the auction/chase scenes originated.

Two of the strongest women in a Disney attraction never truly got added to it. Anne Bonny & Mary Read were Marc Davis’s grand finale of a walk-through version of the attraction that never came to pass. At least we have them on the wall of the queue in Disneyland…

While most would think this piece of rarely seen concept art by Tom Gilleon is unremarkable, there is much to love about its simplicity in depicting the streamlined elegance of Future World's wayfinding signage, which includes the original logo for CENTURY 3 (aka HORIZONS)!

I recently did a deep dive into the Magic Kingdom’s historic nomenclature guides to get a sense of the creative process in deciding on names for the park. There were definitely some surprises along the way, but none so much as what they almost called the Diamond Horseshoe.

One of the most heartbreaking losses in New Orleans Square is the lack of access to the Court of Angels to all guests of Disneyland. I also think the One-of-a-Kind shop would be the perfect addition to the space that Disney can’t decide if it’s a retail space or a seating area.

If you want a deeper dive complete with some rare photos of the interior of these shops in New Orleans Square, we recently discussed Walt’s New Orleans Square on Distory with Kate & Kirk youtu.be/UDD-MYkvydQ

Marty Sklar proposed something radically different for the windows on Main Street in WDW than the tribute tradition in Disneyland. He was denied by Roy (for a very meaningful reason), but I love that some of his ideas were still integrated with fictional proprietors.

It’s when they started replacing fantastic placemaking and believed dark rides with mediocre product placements. There’s plenty of expansion space at the resort, as well as attractions that don’t deliver to the old Disney Standards, but those are rarely the areas they’re touching
What point did disney fans start hating new park additions/replacements vs getting excited for them? Was it the rise of social media?

If you're not watching this epic series on what is still one of the greatest attractions ever created, you're missing out!
With 119 audio animatronic figures & 54 animals, the creation of Pirates of the Caribbean was no small feat. This Distory ep. features hilarious stories & historical documents, as well as some thoughts about how grief can disrupt the creative process. youtu.be/Qh5zWBxnRqo

Satire Warning: Yep, Alice Davis was a man-hating feminist. That's why she got married to Disney's "Ladies Man", and worked on Pirates in the first place. It's also why she worked in a male-dominated design firm. 🙄 Also, Alice was RIGHT and saved the attraction!
Replying to @DisneyCicerone
Jesus Christ … now the feminists are just making shit up to prove they’re better 😂😂😂 Fucking laughable Enjoy being single with your cats

Easily one of my favorite stories from Pirates of the Caribbean was when the male sculptors didn’t listen to Alice Davis, leading to an uncomfortable consequence. “There was quite an emotional moment with all of them” was how Alice described it when she made her suggestion.

Not all of the ghosts in the Haunted Mansion have explanations, but I would be shocked if this connection didn’t explain these two. Sadly, the Blue Bayou menu no longer says the tree is a dueling oak, it just mentions oak trees in general, so this history has been lost over time.

In stark contrast to all the AI detractors, these new tools can help breathe new life into the images of our past, as in this colorization of an iconic B&W photo of Cinderella Castle in all its 1974 glory as it towers over the spartan foliage of a young Magic Kingdom.

Alright, The Walt Disney Studios Courtyard is awesome as is, but I made one small adjustment and, well… I rest my case.

When Walt built Disneyland, I don’t think that he had any idea what the park would mean to us decades later. How nostalgia itself would become an attraction, the very reason we go to the Disney parks. It’s the museum of our childhood.

Those of you who have been following me closely for years should know how excited I am that the CAROUSEL OF PROGRESS will once again live up to its name as its creators intended. This might come as a shock to some of you so let me explain: 1|9

HOWEVER, I couldn't agree more with my fellow Disney Historian & frequent collaborator @DisneyCicerone that the 60 yo sets of the first three acts should be sent back to Disneyland to restore the 1967 iteration of the attraction, complete with a new Progress City Model! 8|9

And I would second my dear friend and vicarious mentor @TomKMorris in saying that the amazing Kaleidophonic Organ should return in some form. 9|9
