After many of you lovely people told me how you say “garage” in a poll, I concluded that it has too many pronunciations to work in a rhyming poem.
Which meant, of course, that I had to try.
Word that’s making me smile today: colt. It’s what baby sandhill cranes are called, because they can follow their parents on their long, strong legs shortly after birth.

Expression that’s making me smile today: Let’s saddle the chickens! It’s a German way of saying “Let's get going!”

Word that’s making me smile today: squackett. It’s an old dialect term for making noises that sound like the quacks of a crabby duck. “What are you squacketting about?”

'Sleeping Mud Maid', living sculpture, in summer and in winter, by UK artist Sue Hill (and Pete Hill) at The Lost Gardens of Heligan, Cornwall, UK #WomensArt#Spring
Expression that’s making me smile today: “I haven’t herded geese with you.” It’s what Croatians say when someone is acting in an overly familiar way with them.

Word that’s making me smile today: pretzel-bender. It’s a multi-purpose bit of mid 20th century American slang that can mean, among other things, an odd person, a wrestler, or a French horn player.

April is National Poetry Month.
My plan is always to *visit* a poem every day.
Here's what I mean...
Visiting a poem is:
- Reading someone else's poem
- Beginning a new poem
- Finishing a poem
- Tweaking even just a word
- Looking at a poem not knowing how to improve it
Word that’s making me smile today: hanami. It’s an untranslatable Japanese word for enjoying the ephemeral beauty of flowers, particularly cherry blossoms.

Word that’s making me smile today: vespering. One of its meanings is flying westward toward the sunset.

Word that’s making me smile today: clagarnach. It’s an untranslatable Irish word that literally means “clattering,” for the strangely comforting sound of heavy rain hitting the rooftop or windows when you are cozy inside.
