It’s been a while. Over the past year I’ve spent less time posting and more time building. Coaching. Club development. Coach education. Player development systems. The result? Many of the ideas that started as Diamond Code have evolved into something much bigger. Over the next few weeks I’ll be sharing what I’ve learned about building intelligent players, aligned coaches, and better development environments. Let’s get back to talking soccer

I can’t get over it. These hydration breaks ruin the game. We can’t allow this to continue

Many coaches are obsessed with defining the perfect player profile for every position. I’m more interested in developing intelligent, adaptable players who can solve problems in multiple roles and multiple game situations. The game changes. Intelligent players adapt.

Amen. The breaks are ridiculous
🚨 Jürgen Klopp has launched a scathing attack on the cooling breaks being used during this World Cup. 👊 "Football is being held hostage by executives sitting in air-conditioned offices. These breaks are being presented as a shield for player welfare, a noble weapon against the heat. In reality, they are nothing more than a golden cage built for sponsors. When I saw players standing around during cooling breaks while television timeouts dictated the rhythm of the match, I couldn't help but ask myself: who is the World Cup really serving? The supporters? The players? Or the advertisers? A World Cup match should flow like a river. Instead, we are building dams in the middle of it so commercials can be shown. It's dangerous for the spirit of the game. Football used to be the main event, but it now risks becoming background music for an advertising show." He didn't hold back. 👏👏

So many people spend more time on social media than they do their craft. If you have followed me, yes I have things I give out, sell, whatever but when it’s time to work, we get to work. We need to be more intentional about our time. We should always be seeking ways to improve ourselves but once we are in the job, we need to be giving it your all. That’s why in the summer, I’m very active. But once the season starts, I disappear

I don’t always agree with Landon Donovan, but I think he’s right about this. I recently had someone argue that we develop talent just as well as the top footballing nations and that college soccer is the main reason our players fall behind. To me, that’s a massive misunderstanding of the problem. College soccer has its flaws, but the idea that we’re consistently developing players as well as countries like Spain, Argentina, France, Germany, or Portugal is hard to defend. The biggest opportunity in American soccer is still at the youngest ages. The foundation is built long before college, yet too often our best coaches are working with the oldest players instead of the youngest.
“ 2002 World Cup is the furthest USA has ever been, we have only won one knockout game in our history. It’s alarming, we aren’t developing players like the rest of the world. Our Youth soccer in America is a disaster “ Landon Donovan ( former captain of USA football team)

Players don’t always make poor decisions because they lack technique. Many times they make poor decisions because they recognize the situation too late.

One thing I’ve changed my mind on over the years: I used to spend a lot of time looking for the perfect drill. Now I spend far more time thinking about the problem I want players to solve. The activity matters. The coaching matters. But neither matters if the players aren’t repeatedly exposed to the situations they will actually face in games. A lot of development problems aren’t technical problems. They’re recognition problems. Players don’t always fail because they can’t execute. Often they fail because they don’t recognize the opportunity early enough. The best training environments help players see the game sooner, not just perform actions better.

Someone has gone to the effort of putting together a dossier of refereeing decisions that have gone in favour of Arsenal and supposedly- "handed them the title" 🤣

I’m sorry but this is literal propaganda. Yes Ecnl is stronger than GA. But Ecnl rl is NOT outperforming GA by a metric. Remember Ecnl rl is accepting almost every team that even applies. Quantity over quality
⚽️ ECNL vs GA ⚽️ By now there is no argument. ECNL is a better platform than GA. Since the ECNL platform is stronger, their ECNL-RL platform is starting to out perform the GA. You’re starting to see a lot of ECNL-RL teams with a lot more college commitments than GA teams. ECNL has won, and their RL platform is starting to take a second place seat above GA in the race for college soccer commitments. If you’re a GA club, beg whoever you need to and try to enter your club in the ECNL or get left behind. Thank you @susa_academy for the stats. @ECNLgirls @GAcademyLeague #CSTruth

Youth Coaches 🙏 For the love of any God you choose, trash the poles, bars, hoops and ladders. Cones are not defenders. ▪️ All under the painful pretense of “technical training.” Please, begging you to stop for the sake of our children. #TOVO #intelligentfootball
