Whitney Oakley is @GCSchoolsNC 1st superintendent who was also a student in the system. “I take that very seriously b/c it’s my home, my community, & I would never be in this place without the community that I grew up in.” madeingso.com/2023/01/05/whi…#soGSO#MadeinGSO
North Carolina can do better than 48th out of 50th for school funding. We all live with this reality and teachers deserve more. edlawcenter.org/research/mak…
The Respect for Marriage Act protects all married couples from the unpredictable Supreme Court and the cruel overreach of state legislatures. Congress should pass this law and send it to President Biden for his signature now. - RC
On this anniversary of the Wilmington Massacre, we mourn the lives lost and reflect on the horrific event that took place. We must continue to be aware that systemic racism still persists and recommit ourselves to freedom and justice for all people.
#OnThisDay in 1898, a white mob led an attack on the African American residents of Wilmington, NC in an effort to regain political control. Known as the Wilmington Massacre, author Charles Chesnutt penned a novel in 1901 based on the event which some of his relatives survived.

One of my greatest achievements while working in GCS was getting to learn from the leadership of Dr. Carpenter. Our students are lucky to have her! @TLashone
We currently have around 41,000 residents without power. Duke is ready to begin working to resolve as soon as it is safe to do so. We have 200 downed trees called in. We have City crews from that will be working overnight to clear streets.
As of now, approx 49k people are without power in Guilford County. Pls exercise caution when traveling. Many intersections are without power. Remember to treat them as a four-way stop. Be cautious, be patient and we will get through this together. @greensborocity@DukeEnergy
Visiting classrooms is the best part of the job! I had the privilege of visiting Ms. Maereg who is a first year CM at Penn-Griffin! Even though she teaches math she included a vocab/word wall in her room to help her students! The ELA teacher inside of me is so happy! @OneDay_NC
After watching Dr. Oakley get sworn in I quickly jumped into a coaching call with an amazing first year teacher where we discussed all things data and classroom management! It’s never work when you love what you do!
While working today I got the awesome update that GCS was naming Whitney Oakley as their next Superintendent! I got to take a quick break to watch this amazing moment!
My next tip is for our current CMs. Take time to get to know the people in your corps, the corps before you, and the corps after you! They can become not only resources but your best friends! I’m so lucky to call people from my corps and the corps before and after me my besties!
After lunch and feedback i “switch hats” and begin reviewing our Prism newsletter. Prism is one of our boards here in TFA NC and I am lucky to serve as the board liaison. This month our newsletter was written by alum Maggie O’Daniel! Check it out here! smore.com/5k4av
Once I get home I start a working lunch! With a little chipotle motivation I begin finalizing my feedback from my visits. I promise my CMs typed feedback within 24 hours. I usually use a what is a teacher doing/what are students doing template.
On the drive back from visiting schools I had the privilege to talk with the Bullying Prevention and Positive Supports Coordinator (Dr. Carpenter) from GCS. Dr. Carpenter is planning Unity Day for GCS and wanted to share some resources for teachers! pacer.org/bullying/nbpm/unit…
Our next tip is coming directly from Ms. Rafter! Consider utilizing an interactive/visual for representing voice levels and other basic expectations. Students will be reminded of expectations through these demonstrations. Attached see how Ms. Rafter uses lights for voice level!
Emma Rafter is a 2021 CM and I had the privilege of coaching her last year! She is at James Martin and teaches 6th grade science. As Emma starts her second year she really wants to focus on increasing rigor and engagement in her class. Emma is an amazing educator!
