In 1844 Arichat was named as the seat of the Catholic diocese for Eastern Nova Scotia. At one time there were three licensed barrooms between the Court House and Godfrey’s Lane. There was a photo salon at the head of the harbour and there was a Chinese laundry.

By 1801, Arichat had a fleet of 192 ships and in 1811 more than 60 ships were built. Between 1855 and 1932, approximately 600 ships operated out of the port. The shoreline was dotted with 15 to 20 wharves. By 1832 the population reached 2,000.
