Google fumbling the bag with Google Discover after HCU is honestly one of the worse moves I've ever seen
They could have turned niche publishers from keyword-focused content farms
To the blogging version of YouTube,
Where if you created unique, non-keyword-focused content that was actually really good (cool stories on the topic, interviews, deep-dives, actual journalism...)
You'd get pumped based on engagement rates with your content and potentially get hundreds of thousands of views, and your month's income, from one banger article
(Like YouTube)
But no, instead, most got banished entirely from Discover due to the minimum site quality score hits that seem to always be applied unless you're a huge media brand
I'm not an SEO anymore so I don't care, but it's just such a missed win.
And it's bad for humanity because they disincentivise creativity by not even trying to push GOOD content
Like even if you don't want to rank niche publishers anymore on Google (the SERPs are worse for it, but ok..)
Then at least create a new meta with Discover where AMAZING content is pushed to a wider audience, like the YouTube algorithm
so that people who like to read cool conteont can get the option of reading this on their lunch breaks or weekends
Huge huge missed win
