β€œI am not what I ought to be, I am not what I want to be, I am not what I hope to be in another world; but still I am not what I once used to be, and by the grace of God I am what I am” - John Newton #grace

Let's get this much right: the so-called Truth and Unity Amendment is not God's Word, nor does it quote God's Word. Specifically, it is a man-made bylaw. God's Word doesn't need to be revised, such as in the case of this amendment.

For the record: If a woman *testifies* on Sunday morning behind the pulpit to the gathered assembly for as long as she wants, that does not violate the Truth and Unity Amendment, according to Dr. Mohler.
In press conference, Mohler gets specific on his amendment’s purpose christianindex.org/stories/i…

Also, here is Ms. Bertha Smith. A woman can stand behind the pulpit and speak in this way to the assembled congregation for as long as she wants, and it does not violate the Truth and Unity Amendment, according to Dr. Mohler, since it is testimony.

For context, when Paul said β€œthe world has been crucified to me,” he was referring to being β€œpersecuted for the cross of Christ,” not for insisting men are in charge. The SBC is off message. May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ… (Gal 6:12-16).
The national media seeks to shame the SBC for expressing our faithful, historic Christian convictions in Orlando. But far be it from us to seek the world’s favor. In Paul’s terms, β€œThe world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.”

If the issue is so clear that there's no room for different interpretations, why not amend the Truth & Unity Amendment to quote Scripture? 6. Does not act to affirm, appoint, or endorse a woman teaching or exercising authority over a man, she must be quiet.
Their belief is based on implications of prohibited function (1 Tim 2:12). To defend it, they MUST justify the prohibition of the function & that means accepting the conclusions of the logic. But b/c they've misinterpreted 1 Tim 2, they MUST follow & accept ludicrous conclusions.

Answer: Healthy SBC churches would come to a grinding halt were it not for the army of faithful women joyfully serving in the leadership of the church, even though they function in direct contradiction to a rigid/strict application of 1 Tim 2:12.

So, we draw an arbitrary circle around the pulpit (something absent from 1st-century house churches) and a title (one scarcely used in the Bible), and are satisfied that we have obeyed a Scripture that mentions neither. Specifically, the amendment is a compromise.

Such an insightful post.
If you have to reconstruct your doctrine of the Trinity in order to preserve your peculiar doctrine of humanity, then maybe, just maybe, there is something wrong with both your doctrine of humanity and your doctrine of God. Oh, and also your theological method.

The conversation is already moving to not allowing women to lead worship or serve as missionaries if they are single or in some geographic areas.
The door we just opened…

The comments on this post are the fruit of the Truth and 74.66% Unity Amendment. Even if you are for the amendment, you should still grieve parting ways with fellow believers. Indifference is not a fruit of the Spirit.
I'm afraid the #SBC26 just signaled that I'm not welcome any more.

The debate on whether or not to go to Anaheim lasted longer than the debate to amend our constitution.

Southern Baptists have been debating on whether to gather in Anaheim in 8 years for longer than they did on Mohler's proposed constitutional amendment to enshrine a ban on women pastors. #SBC26

Pastor Andrew is absolutely right.
A pet peeve re: the SBC annual meeting is when the question is called before a motion has had the chance to be debated adequately. It’s a shrewd tactic but it’s poor form & doesn’t serve the messengers well. You don’t need to strong-arm a strong motion. #sbc26

Why a SBC motion encouraging our teachers and writers address the deep theological crisis in American evangelicalism? 1. A clear majority of American evangelicals (53%) agree with the heretical statement, β€œThe Holy Spirit is a force but is not a personal β€―being.”

To the abuse survivor who is seeing your protection and your abuser’s accountability cast as β€œwoke” or β€œprogressive” or β€œcultural” or β€œunbiblical,” let me say: I am sorry. These are lies. You are valued and loved. #SBC26

Call the question because there are no good arguments for the amendment. Healthy debate would be detrimental to the Truth and Unity Amendment.

What I’m about to say should be said by the governor, the state attorney general, and the mayor of St. Paul, but they’ve created a crisis and remain silent. Minnesotans: please respect people’s right to peaceful religious gatherings. This goes for mosques, cathedrals, temples, and churches β€” every kind of person. Do not invade their place of worship, and do not harass people on their way to worship. Leave them alone.
