Restaurant reviews simply based on whether one restaurant is better than another. Instead of writing a review, it should ask you which of two similar restaurants is better. That’s all you need to construct an ELO ranking scale.

You and your ragtag team of engineers likely won’t be able to create something that is competitive with any big incumbent product. However, you can build features, seed content, and brand it in a way that is so obnoxiously relevant for a particular group of people that their only possible reaction is “Well, fuck. You got me. I have to download this now.” So, if you ever find yourself overwhelmed by all the things you need to build to make something worth switching, you should just try narrowing your audience. Sure the initial market will be smaller, but you can use it as a wedge to make it incrementally more useful to a broader audience. After all, Airbnb was initially a way to find air mattresses to sleep on while at design conferences. Now you use it to rent a castle in the South of France.

It's not X, it's not the platform formerly known as Twitter...it's Twitter. It's just Twitter. If some rich guy bought my whole town and renamed it, I wouldn't start calling it "The town formerly known as Missoula." It would still be Missoula, just like this is still Twitter.

I used to think every pull request (PR) needed to be "perfect". All win, no downsides. But sometimes a PR is many steps forward, and one step backward. This doesn't necessarily mean the PR must be blocked. Instead, I often suggest opening a separate ticket to address the downsides. This way, the good stuff can be merged today, and the downsides can be addressed tomorrow.

It’s amazing what happens when you change your mindset from: “I need to repair everything that’s decaying” to “I need to create value faster than things decay” If your house is decaying at 2% per year and you create 10% a year in new value, you are way ahead The great trap for conscientious people (like me), is that we think we can start creating new value once we catch up with maintenance on all the things decaying The problem is, this is impossible. Repairing decay can absorb every ounce of your time until you die, and you still will not win. Your house will ultimately collapse eventually. On the other hand, creating value faster than things decay is super easy. To the untrained eye, this can look like chaos and neglect. But it is really the only way off of the hamster wheel. And many, many people stay on that hamster wheel their whole lives.

Someone definitely deserves a raise for this. Interesting read about how serverless / lambda / cloud run isn't always the answer

"Easter, then, is a not metaphor for new beginnings; it is about encountering the person who, despite every disappointment we experience with ourselves and with the world, gives us a reason to carry on." ✝️
