Excited to share that I've received funding from the RSC Inclusion and Diversity Fund to run a series of podcasts aimed primarily at the LGBTQIA STEM community. Please share this as widely as possible as I'm looking for podcast interviewees!!
Spent a little time at the Angus Alchemy distillery this afternoon trying out their variety of moonshine. Have to recommend the Clootie Biscoff or the Banoffee ones! #tasteofangus
Exciting day today with the Top Of the Bench (Heats) event participated by 12 secondary schools from the Tayside, Angus and Fife regions organised by the @RoySocChem local section Tayside #RSCTayside and @StAndrewsChem@univofstandrews!
So it turns out that the samples my student has made are both thermo- and solvatochromic. Looks like this experiment just got a whole lot more interesting!
Great to see so many people come down to chat about our Hidden Figures In Chemistry #EDI project with @StAndrews_Learn this afternoon in @StAndrewsChem with a kind donation from @RoySocChem (and meet all of my superstar students in person for the first time!)

RTs on this thread but especially those with the fantastic animations would be welcome, or ping it to those interested in #EDI#LGBTinSci#womeninSTEM. DMs open for any questions!
If you want to improve representation itβs important to recognise the history of your department, and I would encourage other (chemistry) depts to take a look into their history - you might find some really interesting people/chemistry!
Itβs been great hearing about everyoneβs work as part of @StAndrews_Learn today, even more so with our project winning 3 out of 8 awards! Huge congrats to Ananya and Ryan for winning their grad skills categories, and I was very humbled to jointly win the coach award.
We will also be highlighting this work alongside full interviews in the department later in September, kindly sponsored by @RoySocChem Tayside.
More on this soon, here is a sneak peak!
The students also interviewed current members of the department to talk careers, chemistry, and representation. If you ever needed an introduction to both solid state NMR and the wonderful work of Sharon Ashbrook, the team made another fab animation! (Slightly trimmed for here)
Super excited to be sharing a side project I had the pleasure of leading this last couple of months looking at #EDI and funded by @StAndrews_Learn @univofstandrews called βhidden figures in the chemistry departmentβ which Iβll put into a wee thread:
We took a look at the history of representation in @StAndrewsChem since the inception of the department. Ananya made this amazing video highlighting the work of Ettie Steele, who discovered the structure of mannitol!
For anyone interested a friend of mine has written a really interesting blog post, that summarises why failure in science is often just as important as success adamhrw.wixsite.com/offelautβ¦
Truly inspiring talks at the Nigel Botting 26th National Meeting for Scottish Teachers of Chemistry Meeting last Friday! π‘At University of StAndrews @StAndrewsChem@RSC_Scotland@SSERCofficial
@OChemistree We have a colour changing #Chemistree in the @StAndrewsChem teaching lab this year. Theme is organic chem/2022 Nobel prize. Flasks containing glucose, methylene blue and thionin. The big flask contains cream of tartar, copper sulfate and a bit of peroxide. 1/2
