Folks, I can no longer support the crazy dingdong running this show. I have to say "so long' to my 1000s of followers and followees, and start all over at bluesky. Find me @random-blackbear.bsky.social. Keeping this accountso noone starts posting in my name. It has happened.

If you’re interested in the latest update of #wolverines in #Alberta, go check out @JasonTFisherLab ‘s update on wolverine population data and @kentomologie ‘s thread 🌲
Replying to @ABForestryParks
@ABForestryParks Minister stated that lifting trapping limits on species like #wolverines was necessary to update population data. However, recently published research provides estimates w/o trapping, & was notably "supported by the Government of Alberta" onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/…

So apply a different normalization to the deer data: different model outcome. (If all normalizations are equal this wouldn't have happened!) Again, this is a common outcome in stats models, nothing to be surprised by. dx.doi.org/10.21449/ijate.47… doi.org/10.1016/j.asoc.2019.…

When I talk about abrupt permafrost thaw, this is what I mean. This collapsed and flooded area was not here earlier this summer. Loss of permafrost means losing the backbone of northern ecosystems. #ClimateCrisis #ClimatActionNow

***New paper alert*** White-tailed #deer are expanding through the #boreal forest with substantial negative consequences. Why? A recent paper stressed this is primarily #climate driven, but our re-analysis suggests it's 50/50 habitat/climate. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/…

Their response is here. NB we do *not* discount climate. Our paper clearly shows the models advocate for 50/50 blame - as ecological theory predicts. Stats can be debated all day, but the fact is, transformation DOES matter in model selection. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/…

Culling wolves alters the survivors’ behaviour, which could be bad for caribou. New research from @JasonTFisherLab featured in our Heads Up newsletter for journalists. sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

canadianfieldnaturalist.ca/.… New paper shares min. # species killed in AB’s wolf strychnine program 2005–2020. Fewer wolves were killed compared with non-target animals, including 10 mammal & 4 bird species. I suspect there are even > non-target deaths & suffering caused by 1080.
