In a democratic South Africa, language has increasingly become the bridge that heals past divisions, with citizens intentionally crossing cultural boundaries to learn from one another. In KwaZulu-Natal, this linguistic evolution is fostering deeper social cohesion. Senior reporter Jayed Paulse sat down with two residents of Indian origin who have embraced isiZulu as a vital part of their daily lives, business, and families. #sabcnews youtu.be/Sgm1MvhVcLc?si=btxO…

A vibrant march, which kicked off Africa Day celebrations in Durban, was characterised by rich colours and the rhythmic sound of drums - a showcase of the country's proud heritage and culture. The celebrations were intended to project a message of unity and social cohesion, as they took place in a city at the centre of protests over illegal migration. But on the day, there was a message for all Africans to practice the shared values of Ubuntu - an African philosophy meaning 'humanity to others'. #sabcnews

This year's Africa Day follows a tense week in the city. Hundreds of foreign nationals sought refuge in the city after saying they were intimidated and chased away from their homes.   It led to intervention by city authorities and a verification process to assess the legal status of foreign nationals. Government insists that it tightened border security and deported undocumented individuals to ease tensions. #sabcnews

Thank you @MbekezeliMB 🙏
Jayed-Leigh you’ve been doing incredible reporting on the ground. It’s courageous, important and urgent. Please stay safe and take heart in the vital role you’re playing right now. Our country needs you. Stay true to your principles.

Reporting on the foreign national issue here in Durban has become an absolute minefield lately. When feelings run this high, the vitriol is sharp both on the ground and online. I’ve been called a traitor and told I’m not patriotic, but if anything, the heat has only made me realise how vital our role is right now. The fact is, journalists have to remain impartial, If we lose our objectivity and start riding the wave of anger, we aren't journalists anymore we're just fueling a fire that is already burning out of control. Impartiality means we care enough to give the full picture by covering both sides. That means speaking to foreign nationals who say they're living in fear, while simultaneously reporting on the very real economic frustrations and concerns of South Africans. I implore you to show grace to those who are covering this story. We are not agents. There is no hidden agenda. We are not captured.
