A really good thread about the importance of welcoming new researchers to a field. Best paper awards are a way of recognizing work that helps us think about problems from new perspectives & first authors are often new researchers to the field. We welcome such contributions! 🙏

Today was the last day of “Designing AI to Cultivate Human Well Being” @stanfordgsb taught with Fei Fei Li, Wendy de la Rosa and Susannah Hume Shattuck. I am so proud of our students who sprinted for two weeks to create projects that leverage AI for human-being (1/2)
I was at Amzn in 2000 when the internet bubble popped. Capital markets dried up & we were burning $1B/yr. Our biggest expense was datacenter -> expensive Sun servers. We spent a year ripping out Sun & replacing with HP/Linux, which formed the foundation for AWS. The backstory:
