Just received the nicest email from a reader of “Wicked Problems”, who described it as dog eared and highlighted. If you read someone’s work & like it, please do drop a line. Academics don’t typically make $$ off books and rarely know if anyone even reads it.

When you erase history you repeat it.

Change requires urgency & intentional behaviour. Reconciliation requires hearing meaningfully not simply listening, transparency, healing spaces, and ongoing actionable change as one type of accountability to those harmed by genocide & violence.
If I'm sick of hearing apologies, I cannot imagine... how Indigenous communities feel... how other racialized communities feel... how women survivors of male violence feel... We're long past apologies for ongoing criminal acts. Shock us. Treat them like crimes. They are.

Today, our team saw an elder who was dying from #COVID19 after only one dose of the vaccine. I can't help but think she would still be alive today if she had received her 2nd dose. Why aren't we prioritizing 2nd doses for older adults and those most vulnerable?

2. Get as much exposure to frontline policing as you can during your degree. While my degrees taught me a lot, I learned as much from going on police ride-alongs, including what I think needs to change in policing.

2. With respect to research intended to have a positive impact on policing, I believe active collaboration, open communication, and mutual respect always make positive change more likely. Student placements and research partnerships help with those things.

There has been a lot of discussion about the recent decision by Crim @Carleton_U to stop student placements with CJ agencies. I’ve been reflecting a lot on this because @CU_Psychology also runs placements. My advice to students, esp those who want to work towards change…

I was looking over the vet paperwork and Mowgli gained 1.5 pounds. I had the typical female humanoid reaction to weight gain - what?!? I got this look in return. I’m not replacing the battery in my scale ... 🤫

She has dreamed of one day attending @Harvard. But, tonight, she says, “Mom, I know you’re from #NovaScotia, and I know you work for the police. So I’d like to donate my @Harvard savings to the officer’s family.” Tears. ❤️ is full. #NovaScotiaStrong

Someone has adjusted just fine to being a service dog working from home! Now as for physical distancing ... he misses his canine buddies.

More grateful than ever for the work that university support staff do behind the scenes to keep things running. Right now, they are keeping entire universities operating from their kitchen tables in incredibly challenging conditions. There is no university without support staff!

A stark warning on #COVID19 Ottawa medical officer of health Dr. @VeraEtches: "testing isn’t able to track down each case in our community because the mild illness the majority of people experience is not distinguishable from common colds and we cannot test large numbers."

With the known and rapidly growing global risks of COVID-19, we want to be explicit: going to Ezra Avenue in Waterloo or participating in other unsanctioned public gatherings to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day is irresponsible. More here: bit.ly/2IW4hBj

"We all have a part to play in public safety," says @Chief_BLarkin, as he asks people to reconsider attending large gatherings. "The time for us to come together and act is now. "Stay home. Stay healthy. Stay safe." Read his full message here: bit.ly/2WgMVqQ #COVID19

Our Chair in Suicide Prevention Research, Zachary Kaminsky, is excited about the possibility of using AI to parse social media posts to find words or images that flag thoughts of suicide. He believes an algorithm to identify suicide risk is only a few years away from use.
