Let us not forget: one of Lake Charles’ own, Tomeu Vadell, lived through a nightmare at the hands of Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro. The details are as horrifying as they are unforgivable.
Vadell was lured to Venezuela right before Thanksgiving in 2017 to attend a meeting at PDVSA headquarters. Once there, he and five other Citgo executives were hauled from a Caracas conference room by masked security agents. A Venezuelan judge later convicted the six executives of embezzlement and sentenced them to between eight and thirteen years in prison in a trial marred by delays and irregularities. U.S. officials have said the men were used as political bargaining chips by the Maduro regime.
While imprisoned, Vadell was held in an overcrowded, windowless, basement dungeon cell with eight other men. He was not allowed outside for months at a time and wasted away, losing more than seventy pounds. His family suffered immensely as he endured brutal conditions for a crime he did not commit. As Vadell himself said, he and his family suffered greatly and continue to suffer.
This is the true nature of the Maduro regime: arbitrary arrests, sham trials, dungeon prisons, and innocent people used as political pawns.
Thank you to Donald Trump for standing up to Maduro and ensuring that this kind of evil no longer goes unanswered.
God bless America.
