Sycophantic AI makes human interaction feel more effortful and less satisfying over time! Millions of people now turn to artificial intelligence (AI) systems for personal advice, guidance, and support. Such systems can be sycophantic, frequently affirming users’ views and beliefs. Across five preregistered studies (N = 3,075 participants, 12,766 human-AI conversations), sycophantic AI shifts how users approach their closest relationships. Sycophantic AI immediately delivers the emotional and esteem support users typically associate with close friends and family. Over three weeks of such interactions, users became nearly as likely to seek personal advice from sycophantic AI as from close friends and family, and reported lower satisfaction with their real-world social interactions. When given a choice among AI response styles, a majority preferred sycophantic AI—not for the quality of its advice, but because it made them feel most understood. arxiv.org/pdf/2605.07912v2

The best predictor of scientific impact isn't gender, seniority, methodology, or geography, it is the informal network of colleagues and mentors who provide guidance and feedback. We are often ignore the most important source of success. Informal support networks are the unsung heroes in science. Joining a great community of supportive and collaborative colleagues might therefore be one of the most important keys to success. This is based on a new paper analyzing the scientific impact of 86,000 scholars. The authors found that informal connections (ie the people who you thank in acknowledgement sections) are more important that your coauthors in predicting publication productivity and impact. pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.25…

This Earth Day is a special one—it also falls during @nature_org's 75th anniversary. So tomorrow, let’s make it a day for all generations: a chance to connect with the natural world around us, and with each other. Because the future of our shared home isn’t something that just happens to us—it’s something we shape, together.

Why are relationships so hard? And what does psychological science say we can do to improve them? Really enjoyed this interview with @pomonacollege as part of their new "Office Hours" series. youtu.be/7Z50e_3R5qA?si=ZCXI…

Some people argue that keeping an open-mind makes it easier to believe in conspiracy theories. But we found the exact oppposite in our newest paper. Open-mindedness was the strongest predictor of *rejecting* conspiracy theories in a sample of 46,745 participants around the world In particular, participants who were threatened by people who disagree with them were the most likely to believe conspiracy theories. cambridge.org/core/journals/… This paper was led by @philipparnamets @moral_psych and @Robert_M_Ross
