I shared this April 7th, over a year ago. It's made a tremendous difference inside of Shopify since then. Easy to see the AI pickup on any chart. And I think you can see the effects of a highly AI embracing workforce in Shopify's product, pace, and execution. Everyone has agents as exo skeletons for their own creativity now and knows how to use them. Saying the thing matters. And anyway, this note seemed mildly controversial a year ago and seems obvious in retrospect. Always the best sign that you got something right and early.

A “third culture kid” is someone born into one culture and raised in another. They’re often multilingual and chameleonic, adopting behaviors across cultures. Shopify feels like a “third culture company.” It’s an iconic tech company yet an outsider to Silicon Valley. It has the scale of a behemoth and the speed of a startup. It combines German bluntness with Canadian niceness and big beautiful American ambition. It even combines things that seem like contradictions: high intensity with goofy fun, mastery with experimental hacking, optimistic idealism with highly efficient capitalism. I see this delightful third culture in employees, from interns to officers, to @tobi and @harleyf and my colleagues on the board. Shopify’s culture is so distinct because Tobi built it the way he built Shopify: when what already exists isn’t quite right, make your own!

App servers handled a peak of 117 million requests per minute, up 40% from last year → Shopify’s egress processed 237 billion requests → Peak database queries reached over 53 million per second and writes reached over 2 million per second → API processed over 31 million requests per minute at peak
