Some researchers, including some I very much respect, think that we need to stop pussyfooting around and start being more brutal in our way of talking about bad work in our field I disagree. When you are refuting someoneโ€™s work, I think itโ€™s important not to be a dick about it

Every spring, my roses remind me about something important in academia that is easy to forget: the power of perseverance, patience, and the confidence that hard work will pay off in the end.

I think this is in some ways a nice metaphor for research in academia. Sometimes it can feel like there is no progress with paper rejections, dead-ends, problems in research infrastructure. But even when it feels like nothing is happening, things are happening in the background.

I'm trying to think about these photos of my roses as a reminder for persistence in my research. Even when things look like they are dormant and not fitting, thereโ€™s a season coming when it will all come together.

Behavioral research on utilitarianism has largely equated it with sacrifice, e.g. trolley problems. But that's only one aspect. New paper in @TrendsCognSci by @JimACEverett and Guy Kahane argues for new paradigms, e.g. radical impartiality: sciencedirect.com/science/arโ€ฆ

Lucio Corsi skipped every Eurovision pre-party, was ranked low by eurofans, sat outside the Top 10 in the odds, and people were even saying the Italian DJ representing San Marino would do better than himโ€ฆ and yet, he showed up in Basel, did his thing, and finished 5th. ICONIC.

Less than two years ago, Yuval Raphael survived a massacre at a music festival. She hid under dead bodies as Hamas death squads hunted Israelis to kill. Tonight, she took Europeโ€™s biggest stage โ€” and sang a beautiful anthem of resilience and survival! #Eurovision2025๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ฑ

There are whole subfields in which students are trained to substitute quotes by Fanon/Butler/Lorde/Foucault/etc for arguments. Like: "I want to defend P, so here's a quote from a fashionable theorist" How did the supposedly critical humanities become so deferential to authority?
