The big increase in the price of a pint since the last World Cup is sadly due to excessive taxation
There's beer duty, VAT, hiked business rates, higher national insurance as well as new packaging taxes and the effect of the much higher minimum wage.
"We are currently paying 54p a pint in beer duty," said Emma McClarkin of the BBPA. "If we contrast that with other countries in the tournament, we see Spain and Germany only paying 4p."
"That's the kind of gulf that we've got," she said. "That's why we're asking the government to cut the taxation on our pubs, so we can keep a pint affordable for all."
On top of duty, pubs in England must charge 20% VAT. But look at other countries' VAT rates and it's clear that many rival fans will be paying much less, (e.g. Italy & Spain 10%).
Watching the World Cup in a British pub will be an expensive experience.
