While I can not corroborate this entire rumor. I CAN, however verify that WB are scared of @jamesgunn's Man of Tomorrow box office potential after they were unhappy with Superman's $615M box office run. Zaslav was especially unpleased.

Richard Donner ruined Superman for the last 50 years.
He made him godlike. That ruined the mythos. Now we're stuck with a boring character who is the very definition of insanity.
This is why I pointed out in my latest video on the subject that Superman, and all Super Heroes by extension, all lead to Authoritarianism....and why? Because the stories don't end. Crime doesn't end. Bad guys don't stop. It doesn't matter HOW powerful you are, you can't stop human nature...and eventually there will be a straw that breaks the camel's back.
The literally representation of the saying "The road to hell is paved with Good Intentions" is Superman.
