On this Labor Day, those in the profession of medicine would do well to critically consider the downsides of AI, its potential to displace laborers and the unsustainable energy costs that will only widen health disparities. #AI #AIinmedicine #sustainableenergy #labor

Really important work, research that looks to solve practical workflow issues in surgery is too often overlooked. Block time is critical and the flexibility for urgent cases is key to timely patient care.
Excited to share our work on specialty acuity and Operating Room block time metrics published in @JVascSurgVI secure-web.cisco.com/1FjfjIF… @VascSurgMD @KatMcMack @BruceTjadenMD

Positioned well with strong evidence from the US ROPE Consortium studies journals.lww.com/annalsofsur… we can see that the landscape for training women and minority surgeons needs a significant if not drastic overhaul

Studies like these are why @SocietyofBAS has committed to programs like the Diverse Surgeons Initiative which is both academically and morally imperative. @htjacks @DrParisButler

jamanetwork.com/journals/jam… These findings are critical. Axillary node dissections are still being done and the negative effects can greatly impact vulnerable populations. Evidence from the LYMPHA trial and Axillary reverse mapping shows that we can surgically mitigate lymphedema.

jamanetwork.com/journals/jam… Mentorship is critical to maintaining future generations of high quality surgeons, now how many residency programs invest time, funds, and evidence-based infrastructure to the cause?

Musings as I’m back taking care of ICU patients. The landmark results of the TRICC trial have come into question based on recent literature but lots of docs still give blood transfusions to people who aren’t bleeding or critical because hgb is <7. Evidence for that seems limited

In this cohort analysis including 31,045 faculty, female surgeons who are also underrepresented in medicine were the least likely to be promoted and the most likely to leave academia. ja.ma/3UN2FzY @JohnsonJoshMD @heatheryeoMD @JasosaMD @AndreaMMesitiMD

cuts to Medicare reimbursement for outpatient treatment done in hospitals may affect rural communities. But many large non-profit and for-profit health systems have manipulated the payment scale without clear benefit to patient populations #healtheconomics npr.org/sections/health-shot…

Such important work from my co-resident @CBFinnMD. Surgeon compensation models vary widely by institution and likely have a significant impact on clinical and educational work that is yet to be fully understood.
How does surgeon compensation impact clinical practice? Surgeons reported their compensation model (clinical productivity-based incentives vs salary alone) impacts clinical decision-making, relationships with colleagues, and engagement and well-being. ja.ma/3vvGsfs
