J.C. Ryle on Christianity in England in the late 19th c:
‘We have too often been content with zeal for orthodoxy, and have neglected the sober realities of daily practical godliness’.
(Ryle, Holiness, 1883)
Happy to note my article on puritan practical divinity in @OxUniPress’s Research Encyclopedia of Religion has received final approval.
If anyone’s interested in an overview of the history and historiography of puritan experiential piety, it will appear in due course.

Puritan Arthur Dent on doubt:

-Plain Man’s Pathway to Heaven (1601)
We have a ‘living hope’ in Christ:
‘If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied’(1 Cor 15:19)
But in God’s ‘great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ’ (1 Pet 1:3)

What we'd need to fix this is a total overhaul the system.
“They were cracking up not simply because grades had gotten so high but because they knew just how little students were doing to earn them.”
Harvard faculty recognize that grade inflation has become absurd:
