I remember a Q&A in Rome, where he declared that he couldn’t live - literally couldn’t live - without Eliot’s Four Quartets and Bruckner’s symphonies. Later that day, he enthused about the Carry On films and the immortal “Infamy! Infamy!”

RIP Jane Birkin. The songs, the unique interview style… but also superb performances in films by Rivette, Tavernier et al (and as herself, by Agnès Varda). Her daughter Charlotte Gainsbourg made a beautiful documentary about her 2 years ago; see it if you get the chance.

RIP Derek Malcolm. His caustic, often unpublishable one-liners magnificently cut through the nonsense around film, but couldn’t disguise deep knowledge of, and love for cinema. His intro to a mid-80s mini-retrospective of Mrinal Sen was a vital educational moment for me.
