It was the moment when our Production Designer Denise Pizzini gave me four different door handles which could break off a toilet door in 4 diff ways that I thought to myself “my god, this is actually real.”

The line from Laurence before she gets back on the train went through so many phases, because we didn’t want it to be obvious she was getting back on, but we also knew Laurence wasn’t an arsehole. That was so important for the story - that she doesn’t have a bad marriage.

The original line was ‘getting drunk in a bar of a crappy hotel on the coast of Clacton-On-Sea’, but we realised Billy couldn’t have made it from England in time!

There was much debate about how famous Billy was. In the end we decided he wasn’t as famous as he thought he was. Domhnall managed to play the hubris while still being loveable. Billy can laugh at himself.

@nerdsandbeyond 1/2There was a moment filming the pilot, when the incredible first director, Kate Dennis and our brilliant DP, Matt Clarke were testing the lighting on Denise Pizzini’s infinitely perfect set, and Merritt and Domhnall were running their lines for that first scene

2/2 they have together, and I just went “ohhh…” and my shoulders dropped a bit. That was the moment.

This scene in the dining car was about the past melting away and they’re sparring with each other as fearlessly as they ever did. To me, they can’t be polite with each other because their feelings are far from polite.
