✈️NEW RESEARCH ✈️ We need to fly less to stop climate breakdown. But excessive flying is dominated by the well-off. In Western Europe, the richer you are, the more likely you are to fly three or more times a year. It’s the wealthiest who need to reduce their flying the most.

Gross disparity between coverage of luxury yaught sinking and refugees dying regularly in Mediterranean (3,041 last year). All such deaths are tragic but the difference in coverage is dystopian.

I met with a group of teenagers yesterday. One of their teachers had suggested that I talk to them about career paths because they're all anxious about exams, university choices and future work.
Instead of talking to them, I listened, and the actual problem was very different.

Computer science used to be about making the most useful result out of the least amount of compute.
But now due to AI it turned into exact opposite: use the most amount of compute to accomplish the dumbest piece of questionable result.
The dumber and more compute, the better.

This highlights the massive inequality of aviation and climate change.
Worth remembering though that to be among the 15% you only need to take 3 return flights per year. People who do that wouldn't see themselves as wealthy. Easy to point to 'them' but actually, it's us.
70% of flights are taken by just 15% of people – a tiny, wealthy group.
To reduce air travel, without it becoming the preserve of the wealthy few, we need to tax excessive flying. A frequent flyer levy is the fairest way to tackle aviation emissions.
