We've just received some important news from @ReadingCouncil. The contractors working on the Arch have uncovered significant defects to the front stone gable. The entrance will kept closed for the time being for safety. (Photo courtesy of Laura Blackburn) #rdguk #rdg

In case you missed the news, our later founder, Nick Cooksey, has been shortlisted for a posthumous Heritage Champion award, and it would be amazing to have a good group of supporters there to celebrate if he wins, and comiserate if he doesn't.

Everyone involved with JAHA is deeply shocked, as are our contacts at the council. With their support we hope to ensure Nick's hard work and passion for saving the Arch and giving it a new lease of life pay off, resulting in a legacy he would be proud of. #readingoldcemetery

We were glad to hear that the steam cleaning will be patch tested initially and carried out under the supervision of the council's Heritage Officer or another suitably qualified person. #rdg #junctionarch #cemeteryjunction #readingoldcemetery

It’s great that @ReadingCouncil is planning to commission essential structural repairs to the Arch. We anticipate their application for listed building consent will be approved at the Planning Applications Committee meeting on 2 October. #rdguk #junctionarch #cemeteryjunction

In addition, we plan to add a French drain around the perimeter of the Arch to alleviate the damp that is affecting the building, due to the ground level having risen over the years.

This, together with the work the council is planning, should go a fair way towards saving the Arch and making it a place local people can enjoy and feel proud of. We’ll keep you posted!
