A project run by a community group in East Reading with the aim of restoring the derelict Cemetery Junction Arch and repurposing it as a heritage and arts hub.
We've just received some important news from @ReadingCouncil.
The contractors working on the Arch have uncovered significant defects to the front stone gable. The entrance will kept closed for the time being for safety.

In case you missed the news,
our later founder,
Nick Cooksey, has been shortlisted for a posthumous Heritage Champion award, and it would be amazing to have a good group of supporters there to celebrate if he wins, and comiserate if he doesn't.
All are welcome to Nick's funeral, from 12.15pm on Monday 3 February at Reading Crematorium, Henley Road Cemetery, All Hallows Road, Reading RG4 5LP.
This will be followed by a wake at Loddon Brewery, Dunsden Green Farm, Church Lane, Reading RG4 9QD.

We are devastated to share the news that JAHA founder, Nick Cooksey, died suddenly and unexpectedly last week.
He had recently had a major breakthrough, taking us a big step closer to achieving our aims, making the timing especially poignant.

Everyone involved with JAHA is deeply shocked, as are our contacts at the council. With their support we hope to ensure Nick's hard work and passion for saving the Arch and giving it a new lease of life pay off, resulting in a legacy he would be proud of.

Could you spare an hour or two on Saturday 2 November to help us with some site maintenance tasks around the Arch?
We plan to be there from 9.30am-12.30pm.
If you think you might be able to join us, please drop Nick an email at nick@junctionarch.org.

@ReadingCouncil got the go-ahead to proceed with their planned repair work on the Arch at the Planning Applications Committee meeting last Wednesday.
You can see the recording of the meeting here - jump to item 10 for the section about the Arch.

We were glad to hear that the steam cleaning will be patch tested initially and carried out under the supervision of the council's Heritage Officer or another suitably qualified person.

It’s great that @ReadingCouncil is planning to commission essential structural repairs to the Arch. We anticipate their application for listed building consent will be approved at the Planning Applications Committee meeting on 2 October.

In addition, we plan to add a French drain around the perimeter of the Arch to alleviate the damp that is affecting the building, due to the ground level having risen over the years.
This, together with the work the council is planning, should go a fair way towards saving the Arch and making it a place local people can enjoy and feel proud of.
We’ll keep you posted!
