If making Urdu compulsory is justified because a community forms 25% of the local population, then by the same logic, why shouldn’t Tulu be prioritized in Tulu-majority regions and Kodava in Kodava-majority regions? If people born, raised, and educated in Karnataka still cannot read, write, or communicate in Kannada, isn’t that a failure of our language and education policies? Shouldn’t integration through the state’s language be encouraged rather than creating parallel linguistic systems? If Urdu speakers were to exceed 25% across Karnataka, would the next demand be to make Urdu an administrative language as well? Where does this logic end? Many self-styled Kannada activists seem eager to oppose every move of one political party, yet remain silent on policies they would otherwise describe as anti-Kannada when implemented by another. Such selective activism raises legitimate questions about whether their primary commitment is to Kannada or to political loyalty. Kannada will not be protected through selective outrage, double standards, or partisan activism. The language deserves consistent advocacy that rises above party lines and applies the same standard to everyone. Increasingly, many Kannadigas feel that “Kannada activism” has become less about protecting the language and more about a business model for money, publicity, and political relevance.
