This #BlackHistoryMonth, we honor John S. Chase Jr., who broke barriers in 1950 as the first Black graduate student in UT Austin’s School of Architecture—and later the first licensed Black architect in Texas. When firms wouldn’t hire him, he built his own. #BlueprintsOfResilience

In the 1930s, Black students at HBCUs pushed through the Great Depression, while innovators like David Crosthwait Jr., with 35 patents, reshaped STEM. By 1946, Hattie Scott Peterson became the first Black woman to earn a civil engineering license.
