An emissions trading scheme (ETS) is a market-based climate policy tool that sets a limit on greenhouse gas emissions and allows companies to buy and sell emission allowances within this limit. ETSs are becoming popular worldwide as they are considered to be among the most effective and impactful ways to mitigate emissions cost-effectively. This map tracks ETS statuses across 20 emerging economies, collectively representing approximately a third of global GDP. Some have operational systems. Others are building one. What does a snapshot of Saudi Arabia’s labor market reveal about how artificial intelligence interacts with work? One useful way to frame this question is by distinguishing between AI-augmentable jobs, where technology supports tasks while human judgment and decision-making remain central, and AI-automatable jobs, where tasks are repetitive and standardized enough to be largely performed by AI. Between 75% and 80% of Saudi private sector employment falls into occupations with high exposure to artificial intelligence. This indicates that AI adoption has a great potential to influence how tasks are carried out across jobs, rather than leading to uniform job replacement across the labor market.
