Honestly, PBR generation from 3D scans has always felt like a compromise. We trained a diffusion-based model to better separate material properties from scan data, helping reduce noisy artifacts and generate cleaner PBR maps. The difference is pretty obvious. Check the comparisons below.

MeshFlow (@metaai , CVPR 2026 Highlight) generates artist-quality meshes in ~1s — parallel flow transformer, continuous vertex coordinates, no quantization. 18x faster than autoregressive baselines. Image or point cloud conditioned. Explicit vertices and edges, so the output drops straight into 3D workflows. mesh-flow.github.io Parallel generation is clearly the direction. Good to see it landing at this quality.

Gaussian splats shouldn't have locked lighting 💡 We’ve been working on a way to relight them in Blender by baking proxy mesh lighting directly into the splat color. I'm putting this out under an "experimental" tag because the performance needs a lot of work and it's a rough work in progress. That said, it’s fun to mess around with on smaller scans. Honest answer to "do I need KIRI Engine Pro?": Basic is actually free. Unlimited Photo Scan, LiDAR Scan, exports, no watermarks. Upgrade when you hit one of these: - reflective/transparent object you can't scan - need 3D Gaussian Splatting, or 3DGS to Mesh - pipeline needs PBR maps or quad mesh - want AI-Enhanced LiDAR (cleaner geometry, less noise) That's the whole decision.

Featureless objects break most photogrammetry pipelines. Glossy, monochrome, no surface texture. Nothing for feature matching to grab onto. We built a dedicated Featureless Object Scan Mode for exactly this. The chess knight here is basically worst-case: uniform color, smooth curves, specular highlights everywhere. If you've been hitting sensor-Failed errors in LiDAR Object Capture on iPhone 17 Pro, it was a bug deep in Apple's RealityKit framework. We tracked it down and filed a ticket with Apple. The fix is coming in iOS 26.6 (coming soon).
