I find a particularly grating that two presidential administrations in a row now are trying to make it seem like inflation doesn’t matter. And Olympia doesn’t get away clean, either. Today’s commentary.
A single adult needs $135,000 a year to live comfortably in Seattle. The typical household here earns $112,000. The math doesn't work — and Wednesday's 4.2% inflation report just made it worse. @kirocharlie lays it out.

Web commentary new tonight: Thousands of Washington state residents are suffering and dying every year. My understanding is the algorithm completely blocks out this word. Doesn’t sound like the gov speaks the word much, either. He is uniquely qualified to help save lives. So one group is begging him to give them a call.

This is what I wrote about yesterday, starting to show up in the long range forecast. It’s gonna be super hot if this pans out. #wawx #seattlewx
Yes, I bend over backwards to make clear this is a model that's a long time out for Seattle weather forecasts, so take with a grain of salt. A boulder even. But if it holds up, the World Cup match on the 15th will be broiling. #SeattleWX #WAWX mynorthwest.com/pacific-nort…

Trust your own eyes. The problem has gotten demonstrably worse. Just look around. There has to be a better way in our region’s approach to homelessness, addiction, and mental health. You might want to bookmark this one for a long read this weekend.
OPINION: King County adopted a 10-year plan to end homelessness in 2005. We are in year 20. Homelessness has roughly doubled. The plan to end it has, over 20 years, presided over the largest homelessness crisis in the county’s history. mynorthwest.com/kiro-opinion…

The mayor announced, on camera, that Seattle would be the only host city in North America leaving its World Cup surveillance cameras switched off. If something happens here, God forbid, the first question the world asks is what Seattle had in place. The mayor has to explain that the cameras were installed, that the operators were trained, that the only thing missing was the switch, and that she made the call to leave it off. At least we had our principles. What she's doing right now, in real time, with 11 days on the clock, is asking people with bad intentions to pinky-swear they won't attack here. Today's video commentary:
Every World Cup host city in North America activated its surveillance posture for the games — Vancouver turned on 200 cameras, and Toronto is running AI analytics. Seattle installed its Stadium District cameras and left them dark. @KIROCharlie on the trap Mayor Wilson walked the city into, and why she still has time to fix it.

Today's video commentary. This didn't start on her watch, but it is her watch now. And she hasn't stepped foot in the neighborhood that is clearly in crisis. It's a stunning Facebook post from the leader of the city.
Mayor Wilson posted a statement about the North Aurora safety walk this weekend. She named the deputy mayor, the police chief, SDOT, and everyone who went on her behalf. She left out one detail. She wasn't there. After 95 shootings in two years, she still hasn't shown up. @KIROCharlie has something to say about this in today's commentary.

Today’s video commentary. If the sound transit board is making decisions with how to spend billions in taxpayer money, they should be directly elected to do so. Not appointed. Even if they are elected leaders in other capacities.
The Sound Transit board just took a red pen to ST3. Ballard gets cut off at Seattle Center. Kirkland-to-Issaquah pushed to 2050. A car rental tax was raised to help cover the shortfall. And not one of the 18 people who made those calls was elected to that seat. @KIROCharlie takes a deep dive into this on today's commentary.

Sixteen years ago today on another station. At that point, I’d already spent years being told exactly where my place was. Yesterday, Seattle’s Morning News won multiple regional Murrow Awards, including Best Newscast. It’s amazing what can happen when someone finally gives you the opportunity others never would. Keep doing the work.

I know I’m supposed to go home and relax. It’s Friday. But when my contacts living in homes off of Aurora Avenue who are hearing gunshots basically every night tell me this is the solution, after they got a couple of nights of good sleep… I had to write something this afternoon.
OPINION: SDOT removed the neighbors’ steel planters Thursday. They installed concrete barriers spaced wide enough that a car can drive between them. A driver has to slow down. Maybe swerve. That is the answer to a pimp war. mynorthwest.com/kiro-opinion…

Here's today's video commentary. I started thinking of those 80's kid-adult body-switch movies like Big and Freaky Friday... and realized there was a metaphor here.
Five months of Mayor Katie Wilson: a Starbucks boycott, a chief of staff out, the homelessness lead resigned, a cease-and-desist from the police union, and an official video with a high-five to a disembodied hand. @kirocharlie shares how reality is catching up in real time.

Oof. Not what the team at Kent-based Blue Origin was hoping for tonight. Space is hard, and they will surely learn from this. x.com/nasaspaceflight/status…

You guys realize we’re going to have an ST4, right? Today’s video commentary.
Sound Transit's $53.8 billion ST3 plan came in $34.5 billion short. That's roughly $10,000 per person inside the taxing district. Thursday, the board decides which 2016 promises survive. @kirocharlie breaks it down in today's commentary.
