Pompey the Great arrived in Egypt & was assassinated on 28 September 48BC, aged 57 & the day before his 58th birthday. He was seeking aid from the Pharaoh, Ptolemy XIII, in his ongoing civil war with Julius Caesar. Those advising the boy king thought it safer to kill Pompey.

☀️ #OnThisDay #Caligula was elected emperor by the Senate of Rome. At first he was highly popular & his rule was liberal. But after an illness (or poisoning?), he became diabolical. His cruelty, and also financial crises & famine caused by his expenses provoqued people's hatred.
