ADL has been engaging directly with
@Columbia and
@BarnardCollege leadership and campus for months now — just yesterday I went to campus to meet firsthand with Jewish students and heard stories of harassment and intimidation. I saw the Hamas propaganda literally handed out by masked hoodlums. It’s appalling.
Over the past 18 months, these institutions have not effectively addressed the rot of antisemitism. That’s why they scored so poorly on
@ADL's recent Campus Antisemitism Report Card. Its abominable to see how a minority of malevolent students, radicalized faculty and outside agitators have hijacked the school and diverted it away from its core purpose, preventing everyone else from studying, learning and working.
I appreciate how the administration has tried to deescalate and support the whole community, but these bad actors don’t want community; they want conflict. They don’t want dialogue; they want disruption. They don’t want to talk with their Jewish peers; they prefer to terrorize them.
None of this is normal. It's time for change. Columbia needs to adopt an anti-masking policy as Barnard has done. Both schools need to ensure their public safety officers have the power to handle the haters. More active collaboration with the DA and SDNY can ensure that offenders face not just more severe on-campus discipline, but real-world consequences for breaking the law.
Finally, Columbia has an outdated model of governance. It doesn’t work. It’s time for a complete overhaul so that the adults can take charge.
In light of all this, we at ADL appreciate the Trump Administration's efforts to counter campus antisemitism. Using the power of the purse can be effective in prompting change when it hits the right targets.
We look forward to learning more about the cancelled grants to ensure they target the sources of antisemitism - and to seeing Columbia take meaningful action to earn their reinstatement by standing up to those individuals who are hurting the rest of the community.
