The Trump endorsement is starting to become a participation trophy. Show up, do what you’re told, and you’ll win the prize. I bought into MAGA because I felt the duopoly running the country sucked and it had a chance to disrupt the political norm. Seems it’s fast becoming just another back scratching, go along to get along version of insiderism.

I’m a numbers guy and Tuesdays GOP primary led me down some rabbit holes. Here’s the wildest statistic I’ve discovered thus far. South Carolina’s total population growth last year was 79,958. Fastest growth rate in America. Our natural population growth (births minus deaths) was plus 564. Wild eyed southern boys and their better halves native to South Carolina ain’t having anywhere near enough babies to keep the state I love “southern”. Not even close. As the great philosophic poet Bob Dylan proclaimed, “the times they are a-changin”.

Will South Carolinians really allow boomers from the north to decide who its next governor is going to be? The data clearly says we may. There’s so much political science in the Horry county results. And it ain’t “sweet tea and bless your heart”. #southcarolinafirst

It’s Election Day in South Carolina. Have at it voters. I’m particularly interested in the Republican race for governor as I have a “friend of the Pee Dee” running as Lt Governor. I won’t besmirch the other candidates as I have political blemishes of my own and anyone who has the courage to get in the arena has my respect. But the state I love and have lived my entire life in would do well to vote Wilson-Reichenbach. These two men are genuinely good people who’ll try hard to make our state better.

The craziest part of the Scott Pelley/60 Minutes story is he genuinely doesn’t believe the media is biased. And he honestly thinks he’s the gatekeeper to journalistic integrity. He became rich and famous because he had the best lead-in ever, the NFL.

Covid broke normal. We don’t know how to fix it.

Hard times create strong men. Strong men create good times. Good times create weak men. Weak men create hard times. The boomer conservative male traded in his convictions for a desire to be adored and recognized. Board seats and commendations of appreciation became valuable political and economic currency and conservatism became milquetoast. We (I’m a boomer) were conditioned to conformity while blaming the radicals for our shortcomings.

Nick Saban went to Washington to testify that spending in college football is out of control and will eventually destroy the sport. Saban had a “market rate review” or “pay adjustment” provision in his contracts that ensured he remained the highest paid coach in college football. The NCAA is a cartel seeking an anti trust exemption to limit what athletes can earn. Saban as their star witness is pretty damn rich.

I’m an unapologetic Trump supporting MAGA Republican. But if MAGA “bona fides” require unconditional loyalty to a nepotistic and icky endorsement, count me out. Nothing personal but MAGA has no long term future if it’s this superficial.

Political operatives are paid to win elections, by nearly any means necessary. They aren’t paid to educate voters on which candidates are smart and competent. That’s our job. If you get a shitshow, you voted for it.

If you spend any time on the South Carolina coast you had to know that a New Yorker would eventually endorse an Ohioan to be governor of South Carolina.
