The soft bigotry of low expectations, presented as empathy, compassion, and tolerance, is a 1st order threat to our children’s education - trapping them in illiteracy and lifelong dependency.

Adopting "High Quality Instructional Materials" that teachers dont have time to fully implement, is not a flex. Its virtue-signaling masquerading as social justice.

This extends to Canada as well, sadly.
Time to stop clutching pearls and face reality, if a “research university” is still teaching the methods that fuel the illiteracy crisis, it doesn’t deserve the title. Change practice or own the damage.

Too important to have it cut with fluff. Dr Wright, in Savannah, said what she said abt reading. Take it or leave it alone; it's on you. I know this doesnt sit well with many... maybe that's part of the problem. We're sitting too well with illiteracy.

A few things to be mindful of in education: -if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is -old, failed fads come back with new labels -everyone will tell you research supports what they're telling you -slapping a "science of learning" label on something doesn't mean it's research supported -disadvantaged students are hit hardest with new, ineffective, fads -strong claims should come with strong evidence

Woke up to a great reminder not to get a false sense of security. Literacy must be a priority. But people/systems struggle with change... or dont even have the will.

When middle-class children fail through discovery learning, their parents hire tutors who teach them explicitly. Working-class children just fail.

Direct Instruction (DI) provides a clear path for evaluating instructional design. Here are 20 rules and recommendations for effective programs: 1. Maintain stable difficulty. Difficulty should rise slowly and predictably so students never hit a sudden cognitive spike.

Screening is happening in #BritishColumbia this year in #Kindergarten! This is welcome news for #BCEd
Worried screening benchmarks are too challenging for students? Nellie Caruso emphasizes the importance of using a screener as it was researched instead of using an earlier grade level. With patience, persistence, and strong instruction, we can shift outcomes for students.

This press conference about #mathematics education in Manitoba gives us something to think about in #BCEd. It speaks to the (mis)perception of the teaching PROFESSION by so many people who do not understand what it is that teachers are actually tasked with: TEACHING. It is complex, it take specialized training and it is ESSENTIAL to a functioning, democratic and just society. This is a nonpartisan issue that every citizen should be aware of and I applaud champions like @rastokke for their tireless advocacy. #QualityEducationIsASocialJusticeIssue youtu.be/B6SEBEL-2cY?si=7DKp…
