After my 36 y.o. brother was in the cath lab for >8 hours, my parents were besides themselves with worry. Designate a team member to update families often. #PedsICU

Today, my brother is taking another step on his lifelong journey with congenital heart disease and getting a defibrillator placed. I am managing my stress by...grant writing? Trying to throw more starfish into the ocean! @kmasonri #PedsICU #academicmedicine

A federal rule released last night rolls back protections for transgender people and sets a dangerous precedent that could jeopardize children's health in other ways, all in the midst of a global pandemic. We oppose the rule. Pediatricians care for all children.

When I was a resident, Dr. Goldfrank would ask us the same question on every patient we saw: "What is the lesion in the healthcare system that brought this patient to us today?" It was a challenge to look deeper into the root cause of emergencies

Every Intensivist has a “why.” 35 yrs ago Charles was born blue. Not supposed to survive. I was 5, standing at his incubator. My mother gone for weeks, sitting vigil in a PICU, 12 hours away, with each successive surgery. My childhood. Thankful everyday. Now I give back #PedsICU
Today is the anniversary of the first "blue baby" operation, performed by Alfred Blalock on 15-month-old, Eileen Saxon, in 1944. It was conceived of by Blalock, Vivien Thomas, and Helen Taussig. In the photo, Thomas can be seen standing over Blalock's shoulder, guiding him. #CHD

Killing time while traveling? Pretending to work to avoid family? Check out if the PALICC “at-risk for PARDS” criteria actually are associated with clinical outcomes in this new #PedsICU study in @PedCritCareMed by @KatherineSlain from @UHRainbowBabies journals.lww.com/pccmjournal…

Once again, social marginalization is associated with worse outcomes is children with chronic illness. So does it effect kids with critical illness? DKA? @JPediatr @SickKidsNews @sickkids sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

PEDS-VA_2017-2309 pediatrics.aappublications.o…@diversitydataki Great article from Dr. Kersten and colleagues @UCSF. Place matters. Even in acute pediatric illness.

Racial variations in extracorporeal membrane oxygenation use following congenital heart surgery jtcvs.org/article/S0022-5223…. Health care disparities exist in the PICU, too.
