How are y’all demonstrating science/implementing accessible hands-on science with Ss who are 100% online? I would love all the ideas I can get to avoid teaching from my #LavatoryLaboratory again. (Yes, I brought my Zoom classes into my bathroom to show them a dryer ball “moon”.)
Teaching middle school science is the best! Can Ss use @PhETsims of gravity and orbits? Yes. Do they also get excited about making paper Earth “globes” and spinning in their chairs on purpose? Yep. Will they make fun of your poorly drawn globe? DEFINITELY.
I was trying to explain directions in class today (over Zoom), and a student said, “let me explain that in student language.” What do you think about this?

My students each wrote a class expectation, & we went through THEIR shared norms today. This period came up with “be respectful,” so I reminded them of that when we went to a shared Jamboard. THEY did this, y’all. They rearranged the sticky notes to look like this.
I played “Zoom-on Says” with my students for our first day today. It was like Simon Says but with Zoom features. I went through mute, unmute, video on/off, reactions, and chat. I ended with them muted, video on, and writing a hobby in the chat. It was so fun!

Love this @Desmos activity! A great way to get to know students' interests as well as gain insights into potential successes/struggles for classroom discourse. Super excited to try this in my middle school science classes!

@jody_guarino-inspired reading lesson: main deck to keep organized & larger 2nd deck for student responses. It was awesome to see their little icons work when they were in breakout rooms discussing the Qs. We all came together to discuss & a S compared it to a Socratic seminar!
During math warm up (review to build procedural fluency), I asked students to use @eluberoff’s fraction dice roll in @Desmos to come up with a word problem. They were asked to pick a peer’s word problem and solve it. I loved seeing the uniqueness in their Qs and thinking!
Zoom meetings w/ myself to try to make lessons run smoother. Just discovered a great “hack”. Go to “Advanced” when screen sharing & select range (pics 1 & 3 - green box) so slides look full screen to my students (pic 2), but I’m able to easily advance and type in slides (pic 3).
Here’s an overview of the 5-day instructional routine. We’re going to share the ideas using open educational resources including the Student Achievement Fluency Packet, but you can use your adopted instructional materials as well. bit.ly/2JgZiKJ#coreadvocates
